Humans were just rather funny to him. Their actions seemed odd and illogical. On one hand, he could understand it, but it still was confusing to him.
Cain was half fae. While he had some mortality with being part human, there were just things he didn't seem to grasp. He did, however, understand that people didn't like things that were different from them. Strange, since why wouldn't people want to stand out? To be noticed? That's all fae want. To have the attention of others all the time. Yet, being different in ways brought scorn, and so he had learned to play along. It was fun in a way. To pretend. To trick people. He quite enjoyed it.
He lived two lives. Morgan, who was a quiet nerd who kept to himself during the day that could be found attending his courses or at the library or a quiet little shop to read. Cain, who had a lively night life, flirting and partying to his heart's content. People were quite funny. How they acted in different settings. How they treated people based on their looks and personality.
Morgan shuffles into his morning class and made his way to the back. He liked to sit in the back so he could also watch his colleagues. He was studious enough, but there was something fun about watching the other students. Seeing which ones trying to catch extra sleep without getting caught by the professor, the ones that were actually paying attention, or even the ones not paying attention and busying themselves with something else.
He places his books on the table before taking a seat and scanning the room.
Attention from others was never something Jonathan sought out. He can certainly be the one doing the ridiculous dares at parties once he's buzzed enough not to care being the center of attention for a bit but above that, he mostly kept to himself. It was easy to lose self-restraint when it came to his abilities and it was easier to not bring unnecessary attention to himself if he stuck to the wings.
Jonathan was one of the students that filed in after the majority, taking a seat near the middle that happened to be left open. Most students preferred to sit in the back of the room, it lessened the likelihood of being chosen for a question or being caught by the professor. Neither of which he minded. He almost regretted taking a morning class to begin with since he preferred to sleep in so he definitely looks a bit drowsy despite how decently presented he was.
Throughout the class period, he keeps his head in the palm of his hand, pencil idly tapping on the desk between notes. There are a few instances were something catches his attention far off that only he can really hear and that might seem a bit odd to anyone watching since he perks up or makes a face at the sound of interest that had nothing to do with the lecture.
When class ends for the day, he's one of the last ones to leave. Its really one of the only times he notices Morgan if he lags behind or somehow blends with the crowd because he always seemed to smell different compared to everyone else. There were times were he almost thought to give the other a wave in greeting but he always seems to stop himself from doing so, even now.
He watched the other with curiosity. People did plenty of things that he deemed were odd, but they were the oddest of them all. There wasn't any foul play. No illusion magic of any sort. Nothing that he could figure out just by watching. It was just a certain odd behavior for even what he usually saw from people.
Of course, he didn't ask. It was almost more fun this way. To see if he could eventually figure out why the other did what he did. Perhaps they're just off and there was no secret, but he didn't know that yet. The guy seemed pretty average anyways. Nothing particularly weird about them other than their behavior here and there.
He always takes his time packing up and leaving. Mostly because he takes a lot of time thinking about what he wanted to do the rest of the day. If he wanted to stay Morgan or if he felt like shedding the illusion and being Cain.
Or even if he just wanted to go home. Caught up in his thoughts, he ends up knocking a few of his books over, the clatter bringing him out of his thoughts and back into reality. "Ah, bugger me."
Jonathan had made his way into the aisle before he heard the clatter of books falling and glanced behind him at the other. Without a second thought, he was already making his way towards the other's desk and picking up one of the books off the floor before offering it to Morgan with a smile, "Here you go."
Now was as good a time as any to introduce himself after putting it off for so long. Being this close he can really pick up the other's scent, a mix of book pages and teas and generally earthiness, that causes a pause that lasted a bit too long. "Uh... sorry... I'm Jonathan."
Its then that he realizes that he's at a loss for words. He couldn't be like "Oh, we have the same class together," when they were both standing in the same lecture hall. Making all his usual tricks rather useless in the moment like this. This wasn't a library or a cafe to say "Come here often?" either so he's a tad bit awkward.
Morgan takes the book from him, fingers brushing just lightly against Jonathan's own before offering a shy little smile. He wasn't shy and the touch was intentional though. He really did love playing his games no matter the situation.
"No, it's quite alright. I was the dunce who knocked their books over in the first place. You really could have just stared or laughed, after all." His reply is quiet. Soft. Gentle. He chuckles a little.
Morgan picks up his remaining books and sets them back on the desk. "Morgan. Sorry, you really didn't have to help. I appreciate it." He fills the empty space with his own chatter, feigning ignorance to Jonathan's awkwardness. He's sure the other was struggling to keep conversation. It wasn't like they had interacted before now.
Jonathan tenses a little at the touch in passing and the shy smile Morgan gives him. He was quick to fluster if the right cards were played and the other was easily hitting the marks.
"That would have been quite rude if I had." He chimes with as he rubbed the back of his neck, glancing elsewhere. He can't imagine not trying to offer some sort of help, though people would be quick to stare or laugh like Morgan said in this day and age. Though he really is kicking himself for not picking up more of the books.
"Its... uh.. a pleasure to finally meet you." Jonathan offers a soft smile of his own while he sort of fidgets with the bracelet on his wrist. The other was a lot cuter than he originally thought, "I've noticed you a few times at the end of class but I could never find the excuse to say hello until now." He admits.
As much as he'd like to stay and chat more, he blinks at the realization the other might have another class to get to and he's probably holding him up. His own next class didn't start for another hour so he was just burning time, "Ah... sorry, you must have another class to get to... I should probably let you be on your way."
How entertaining. Watching the other seemingly unravel before him. This was definitely not how he intended his day to go, but he suddenly finds that maybe he will have some way to entertain himself. If only for a moment. Jonathan had surely offered the other something dangerous though. Something to play with.
"Well, people can be very rude. Especially for those with nerdier appearances." He adjusts his glasses a bit as though to emphasize his appearance and how others probably perceive him.
And he laughs this little chuckle at that. "I can't say you were missing much, though I promise I don't bite." Which is more of a white lie than an outright lie. He does, however, really love to play with his food. "I mostly keep to myself though. I would have possibly say something sooner had I known you wanted to say a simple hullo."
He shakes his head as he continues to smile at the other. "I'm done for the day, actually. I've got nothing else to do for the day," Morgan replies. "You've got all my time at the moment." Or was it that Jonathan's time belonged to the half fae?
Morgan wasn't wrong about that, it was a cliche as old as time but some people still acted out against those with nerdier appearances and Jonathan never really understood the reason for it. It suited the other rather well though.
Jonathan easily seems to be falling for the other in some sense every time Morgan laughs or keeps smiling at him. It makes it rather difficult not to stare or duck his head or fidget with his bracelet even more. "Better late then never to say hello, it seems." He does wonder if the other was a bit of a loner with how he mentioned he mostly kept to himself.
"Do you... uh... wanna grab coffee or something? I have time to spare before my next class and I can help carry those if you'd like?" He asks, motioning to the other's books on the desk. Who knows when the next class using the hall would file in but he thought best to, at least, not stick around here until they do. It would be a bit of an icebreaker if the other accepted.
Morgan seems to shyly brush some of his bangs out of his eyes as he glances at the other with a small little smile. "Do you always want to say hi to your colleagues like this?" It's asked so innocently. So coyly. "And do you usually ask them out on a coffee date right off the bat? Rather forward, isn't it?"
He'll certainly play along. His curiosity was piqued after all. "Not that I could say no to such a charming man. Even offering to carry my books," he says with a feather light chuckle. "Do you have any place in mind?"
"I mean, its usually at a house party where I'm not like... this." He gives a general motion to himself, not exactly keeping his gaze on Morgan at the moment. He can drink to give himself liquid courage, though it takes quite a few bottles and cups to get to that point. Its easier to seem cooler than he was unlike in this particular instance. Obviously around other students, he's a little more put together and less of a mess.
Jonathan easily flusters more, rubbing at the back of his neck, "I-I mean we don't have to, I just thought it would be the easiest option than the library or one of the tables outside." He finds it a little odd how easily he crumbles around Morgan and he's not sure if its just nerves or something more.
Morgan's reassuring comment that he didn't completely screw this up with his suggestion for coffee helps settle his rising nervousness. There was that soft chuckle and Jonathan feels like a moth to the flame. He gives the other a shy smile, "There's the cafe by the language building if that works for you?"
"Not like this. Whatever do you mean? I think I like you plenty like this." He gestures at the other and then chuckles a bit. "Or do you mean that you don't usually ask geeks out to coffee after they've gone and knocked their books over after class?" He might be teasing the other a little. He can't help it. They're really just too cute.
Really just too cute with how they easily fall into his hands. He's positively gleeful about it. Easy targets were just the funnest for fae. People they can ensnare easily.
"That's fine by me. Anywhere would have been fine, honestly. Really, your company is all too charming." How much fun he can have! "You'll really give me your time of day?" A dangerous question to answer. Not that Jonathan would know any better.
Jonathan opens his mouth to reply but instead turns his head slightly and gives a breathy little laugh. He didn't think he'd get more embarrassed than he already was but Morgan made it so easy. "I guess you can say that. It's not my typical scene but you're the exception." Not that he wouldn't help someone with their knocked over books but he likely wouldn't have asked them out for coffee.
He grabs a good portion of Morgan's books, if not all of them, once Morgan confirmed the destination, "Cafe, it is then." Jonathan doesn't move away from the other just yet, tilting his head as if processing Morgan's question.
"I don't see why not. I don't have anything else more exciting than this." Of course, he'd give the other his practical undivided attention while he was able. It's then that he slowly walks backward before turning around to walk down the steps of the lecture hall. He already made a fool of himself already, it would be best not to add falling down class stairs on top of that.
"The exception. You'll surely make me blush with such words," he replies and glances away shyly. Really playing that shy and awkward nerd when he was anything but.
And he can't help but grin when the other takes his books and replies. Ah, yes. If he really wanted to trap the other, he could. He'll just play for now. Instead, he'll loop one of his arms around one of Jonathan's. "Is this alright? This is a date isn't it?" So he can touch the other as he is, right? He looks shyly up at Jonathan.
He wasn't expecting Morgan to loop his arm around his nor looking up at him the way he was, now he feels like he's back at square one again. Being flustered. Heart racing a bit. "Y-yeah, this is fine." He smiles sheepishly.
Jonathan knows that minor hallway gossip is going to erupt the second they leave the room and he doesn't mind. Its not like what anyone says really gets to him,"Yeah... I guess this would count as a date."
He adjusts his hold on Morgan's books as they make their way towards the on campus cafe, "Too be honest, cafes usually aren't my first choice for first dates." He chuckles a bit, "As much as they're relaxing. If you enjoyed by company after, I wouldn't mind taking you out again. Somewhere with more than just coffee and teas."
"No one really asks me out on dates," Morgan replies softly. A flat out lie because he has had plenty interested in him. Not shy, nerdy Morgan, but he has done plenty. Still, Jonathan doesn't know that. "Especially not handsome people."
Jonathan really just doesn't have a chance.
Morgan offers a little grin. "What is your first choice for a first date then?" Now he's curious. The other didn't really strike him as a coffee date kind of guy, but he now wonders what exactly the other does on his dates. "What would you consider a good time?"
